Dead Living - Manila

Attitudes toward corpses and death in twentieth-century Western society range from morbid fascination to forbidden subject.
There are few places on Earth where grinding poverty and overcrowding foster such an unlikely life-and-death arrangement.
Communities of people who chose to live among the dead do so for economic reasons.
For these people there is nothing unusual about living among the dead since corpses and tombs are part of their communities.
In the cemetery of Manila the living mingle with the dead in order to survive the misery: about 50,000 poor Filipinos live in Norte, or the North Manila Cemetery, the Philippines’ largest public burial ground.
Many tombs are pierced, emptied, and used as shelters at night.
